The good news: your kitten comes to you already litter trained. Here's everything you need to know to keep it that way — and the litter we recommend to make life easy for everyone.
One litter tray per cat, plus one extra. For one kitten, that means two trays minimum. Cats are fussy about sharing, and a tray they consider "theirs" is a tray they will always use.
We recommend tofu litter — it is low odour, low tracking, low dust and very Bengal-friendly. Our two favourite brands are:
Both are anti-bacterial, and both do a brilliant job of keeping the smell down (because kittens, lovely as they are, produce truly impressive smells).
Have the trays ready before your kitten comes home, and put them well away from their food and water. In the one-room week, put both trays in the room with them — and once they have the run of the house, keep a tray easy for them to find. A kitten who has to travel too far to find a tray will sometimes decide your white sofa is closer.
Your kitten already knows what to do. Your job is just to make it easy:
When they first arrive, pop them in the tray once. They will remember.
Tofu litter clumps brilliantly — a quick daily scoop keeps the tray inviting.
If you ever want to change litter, mix the old and new together and transition over a week or so. Sudden changes can put a kitten off the tray entirely.
If your kitten suddenly stops using the tray and you have not changed anything, give us a call before you assume it is bad behaviour. Urinary issues in kittens need quick attention.
If there is a miss, clean it with a good pet enzymatic cleaner (not ammonia-based products) so the spot stops smelling like a toilet option. TruEco is amazing and if you pick your kitten up we will give you a small bottle.
A kitten who trusts their tray from week one never looks for alternatives. Get the tray count and the litter right, and litter training is honestly the easiest part of bringing your Bengal home.
